Why are many farmers at the moment thinking the only two options available are:
1. Sticking with traditional wool breeding OR
2. Going to shedding breeds and having NO wool.
Why not seriously consider the safe, middle ground option of retaining wool and setting out on a proven breeding programme to hugely reduce crutching and dagging and eventually tailing.
While retaining mid micron 25-30 mc wool which always returns a premium above 31 + micron wool.

Client Feedback
Talking to all of our clients at 2TH ram selling, the two biggest concerns that they had were:
(1) They want to stick with wool, but are sick of dagging and crutching. They are seeing a huge reduction in the number of lambs needing dagged for the works. All clients want us to continue baring the points and the back end to reduce workload.
All sale rams have to have a minimum of 2 bare pattern index. We are now starting to get quite a % of rams that have very short wool on the tail which is ideal for leaving tails on works lambs.
(2) Their other concern is that the looming drench resistance across many New Zealand farms, and what to do about it. Our Snowline carla test results for all our sale rams proved 96% carrying medium to high carla, which is a great result. This is giving our clients confidence that we are seriously breeding and culling for increasing worm tolerance in our Snowline sheep.
